TheSan Joaquin County Jail(SJCJ), also known as theJohn Zunino Jail, is operated by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department. 1. Inmate Search

2. Bail Bond Payment
There is a good chance your friend or loved one will be granted temporary release throughbail bonding. You can determine the amount on the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s “Who’s in Custody” page, or by calling the jail.Bailcan be paid at the facility in cash or with a cashier’s check (made out San Joaquin County Superior Court). Alternatively, a licensed bail bondsman can assist you withposting bond.
3. Inmate Phone Communication
Friends and family are not permitted to call into theSan Joaquin County Detention Centerto speak to detainees and inmates. Newly arrested individuals in California are allowed to make some free, outgoingphone calls, and thereafter,John Zunino Jailinmates are provided opportunities to make collect calls.
To facilitateinmate phone calls, San Joaquin County contracts with a third party vendor: Securus. You can set up a phone account on theSecurus website(or call the company at (800) 844-6591) to arrange “Advance Connect” service. This will facilitate prepaid collect calls, which your friend or loved one can use with multiple landline and/or cell phone numbers.
When speaking with a detainee at the jail, it is important to remain aware that your conversations are subject to monitoring and recording. Please refrain from discussing your loved one’s case to avoid making potentially incriminating statements.
4. Commissary Funding
TheSan Joaquin County Correctional Facilityprovides for the basic needs of residents, but most will want to order comfort items from thecommissary.The selection will generally include food items, toiletries, correspondence materials, etc.
Aninmate cash accountis started with funds confiscated during the booking process, and this account is used for commissary purchases. Friends and family members can also contribute money to the account tofund commissary orders. There are a few ways to do this at theFrench Camp Jail:
- In person– Deposit kiosks are located in the public lobby of the main jail, available 24 hours a day. (There are also kiosks in the visitation areas at the South Jail and Honor Camp, available during regular business hours.)

5. Visiting a SJCJ Inmate

San Joaquin County inmates are permitted two personal visits a week (the week beginning Monday), with a maximum of one 45-minute visit a day. There is a limit of three persons per visit, including children and infants.

Check-in at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the visit you want to sign up for. Inmate visiting starts at 9:00 am and the last inmate visit is at 4:00 pm. Visits are 45 minutes long starting on the hour. Inmates housed get two (2) visits per week based on availability.

There are many strictvisitation rulesprovided by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. Posted rules include:
- Current, government-issued photo identification will be required for each adult visitor.
- Minors under the age of 18 must be in the company of a parent or legal guardian. Proof of relationship will be required.
- Children must remain under close supervision throughout the visitation process, and should be prevented from creating a disturbance.
- Food, drink, and tobacco may not be consumed or brought into the visitation area.
- Visitors who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be denied entry.
- Do not bring purses, diaper bags, strollers or any type of container into the visiting room. You may not bring in cell phones, pagers, cameras or recording devices, any type of weapon, drugs or alcohol, lighters or matches. No cosmetic bags, nail files or clippers. Lockers are provided onsite to store small items.
- Visitors are restricted to visiting one SJCJ facility per day.
- If you leave the visiting room once the visit is in progress, you will not be allowed to return.
- Convicted felons and individuals incarcerated in San Joaquin County in the past 30 days are not permitted to visit the facility. Those on parole or probation may visit only after obtaining written consent from the supervising agency.
There is also a strictdress codeforSan Joaquin Jail visitation. The dress code applies to male and female visitors. Clothing should not be revealing or sexually suggestive/provocative. Prohibited items include:
- Pajamas
- Shorts
- Skirts or dresses that fall above the knee
- Tank tops, spaghetti straps or any shirts without sleeves
- Sheer fabric
- Bare midriffs or exposed undergarments
- Clothes styled in recognized gang fashion or displaying gang-related graphics or symbols
- Coats, jackets, sweatshirts
- Overalls
- Hats or hoods
- Jeans with holes
NOTE: Visits are NOT private. Please do not discuss pending criminal charges. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office has installed an automatic device to monitor and record conversations on the inmate visiting telephones.
6. Mail Policies
Friends and family are encouraged to write toSan Joaquin Detention Facilityinmates and can send (and receive) unlimited quantities of postalmail. Inmates are directed to purchase their correspondence materials/stamps through commissary. If indigent and without funds, he or she will receive materials to send out two personal letters a week.

Allmailwill be opened and inspected, but will not generally be read unless there is “cause” for this action. Packages are not allowed. You are permitted to send letters and greeting cards and may enclose photographs 4 x 6” or smaller. Any polaroid photos must have the backing removed.

7. Life and Health at the Detention Center
San Joaquin County Jailinmates have daily access to medical, dental, and mental health care. Correctional Health Care services for inmates is provided bySan Joaquin General Hospital, with transport to the hospital available, if necessary. Over-the-counter andprescription medicationsare also dispensed, as needed. A co-pay may be assessed for onsite care, deductible from the inmate cash account.
The detention center provides work and “good time” opportunities to reduce the confinement period. There is a recreation yard and a library. Religious services and educational programs are also provided at the jail. Inmates can work toward their G.E.D., learn ESL, and/or receive training/certification in auto body shop. There are also classes in conflict resolution, parenting, and other topics available, as well as substance abuse programming.
TheJohn Zunino Detention Centerhas a stated mission to provide an environment free from sexual abuse for incarcerated individuals. Following the precepts of thePrison Rape Elimination Act (PREA),the Sheriff’s office pledges zero-tolerance for sexual assault or sexual harassment in the jail, providinginformation and instructionsfor reporting violations.
8. Custody Alternatives
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s office facilitatescustody alternative programsfor individuals who have been granted leave by the court. The following are offered:
- An “AlternativeWork Program,” allowing sentenced inmates to work 8-10 hour days for a nonprofit organization or public works program.
- AnElectronic Monitoring Program, which allows inmates to serve their sentence at home.
- Work Furlough(orSchool Furlough), allowing inmates to continue with a previously-held job or educational commitment.

9. Inmate Property
All personal property is confiscated by staff during booking and stored at the facility. If desired, the inmate can execute a property release form to authorizeproperty pick upby a friend or relative.
